This magnificent moonflask represents the height of Chinese porcelain production. In the 18th century China’s new rulers looked to the past to reinforce their power. Under the Yongzheng Emperor, Islamic-inspired designs of the 15th century were transformed into elegant, upright vessels with ornate scroll handles. The revival continued under Emperor Qianlong, with the return to the moulded medallion and meticulous decoration of earlier designs. Grand in stature, this sumptuous moonflask honours the glories of the past while affirming the Qianlong Emperor’s legacy as the reigning Son of Heaven.
