I was gonna write this big long thing about our love, but we started our sixth anniversary panicked and with rushing adrenaline when we lost our dogs this morning...we turned around for a minute while they were doing their morning business and looked back and they were gone. I have three canker sores from where I bit my gums last week trying to you know - eat - and I’m screaming their names into the blinding morning, each syllable excruciating as my sores rip open, and I am in my underwear and t-shirt and barefoot. I’m in the truck, driving around the farm with dust swirling into the open windows and sticking to my tear stained cheeks, and then we swap, and Ellen takes the wheel and I’m running with Adelaide, and we take turns shouting “Whiskey! Sofie!” because my mouth is bleeding. Each minute that passed felt like torture, and they always come back. Always and right away. Sometimes they round the corner of the big barn, but they never go far. It had been too long, and we were scared. A farmhand named Carlos finds them, out by the farthest alfalfa field. He speeds up in his truck and waves his hand and Ellen’s off like a shot to follow him, two big trucks disappearing in a cloud of red dust. “I bring, I bring”. His broken English was enough. It was clear, and his concern and care so evident. This man doesn’t know us, we’re just the weird gals restoring an Airstream here, the ones that live on the corner of the farm with piles of wood and tools in our front “yard”. Carlos corralled our crazy labs and got them home, and they ran into our arms, having no idea that they’d done anything out of the ordinary this morning, they’d just been off probably chasing pigeons or barn cats. And now we’re all back home, and the adrenaline is still coursing through our bodies, and the dogs are at our feet and we’re drinking weak, lukewarm coffee that was left mid-pour in the fray and I am still braless and Ellen’s feet are on my leg, and my feet are on Whiskey’s back, feeling the reassurance of her soft fur.
