Executed circa 1900, ‘Trois danseuses debout près d'un portant’ is a beautiful example in pastel of a subject that was to become one of Edgar Degas’ key preoccupations throughout his career: the ballet dancer. Pastel proved an ideal medium for Degas, allowing for a perfect fusion of line and color. His practice was to draw the bold outlines of his composition in charcoal or chalk and then build up the surface with successive layers of pastel. This particular work captures the hidden world behind the scenes of the Palais Garnier's spectacular ballet productions. Three ballerinas uniformly dressed anticipate the moment the curtain will rise, each one preparing in her own way: posturing, stretching and peering. Emerging from the Estate of Dr Martin S.
