Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Grizzly bear cub running – In July of this year I’m leading a trip-of-a-lifetime photographic tour for @tatraphotography to the remote Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian Far East. Our primary goal when there is to photograph the coastal brown bears and having just had two last minute cancellations there is now limited space available. We’ll be working at two legendary photographic locations, Kuril lake and the Kambalnaya river and our visit is timed to coincide with the spectacular salmon spawning. We’ll also be hoping to photograph mums with cubs, like this 3 month old as well as territorial males potentially coming to blows over the best fishing spots. For those of you who might like more information I’ve put a link to the trip in my bio so just head on over there to check it out. This image was actually captured during a trip that I was leading back in 2014 and today was the first time that it’s ever been processed, so far behind am I with processing. This youngster suddenly realised that his mum had wandered off and left him behind so he was scarpering to catch up with her. In these situations I always tend to use the central focussing point and it’s not also the most reliable in terms of accuracy but it is also the most tenacious when trying to maintain focus. A shutter speed at or above 1/500th/sec is preferable when trying to freeze fast moving action and the faster the action the higher the shutter speed will need to be. In this image I’d carelessly let the shutter speed drop to 1/400th/sec and whilst it’s giving the image some nice movement in the legs at this shutter speed I could have messed up the whole sequence. There’s nothing wrong with making mistakes of course, just try to only make them once!
