Photo by @michaelgeorge // My elementary school had a large banyan tree in the middle of the playground. I always loved it because it was a single tree that became its own forest. It was already a treehouse without having to build anything. It had a spiritual presence and felt invincible and as the years went by it continued to grow outward. To this day, banyans have always been my favorite. Back in January, during a drive around Fort Lauderdale, we stumbled upon this giant in Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. Some history by @greetmeetsworld – “In New Caledonia, they used to bury the dead between the roots, so they would live on in the trees and watch over the people they left behind. Banyan trees are still sacred there, even though the tradition doesn’t continue. The banyans are still a gathering place where people tell each other stories, come to calm down, exchange on life.” // #banyantree #banyan #visitflorida #florida #fortlauderdale #hughtaylorbirchstatepark #treefacts #treehistory
