Photo by @rubensalgadoescudero // The International Energy Agency estimates that roughly 1.1 billion people in the world still live without access to electricity. In many communities throughout the world, most all rural labor is still unmechanized, candles - which are both expensive and dangerous - are the only source of light available once the sun sets. Small, inexpensive photovoltaic power (PV) systems can provide households with at least 12 hours of light during the night, allowing people to do more with their waking hours at no additional cost. These portraits depict the lives of inhabitants of remote areas who, for the first time have access to electricity through the power of solar energy. On Earth day I think its important for all of use to realize that solar energy is a plausible solution to this issue. Here, Maria Magdalena Carmen Mendoza (70) makes ‘’Panela’’ under solar light at her home in Llano Silleta, Guerrero Mexico. Panela is unrefined whole cane sugar, which is a solid form of sucrose derived from the boiling and evaporation of sugarcane juice. The name piloncillo means little loaf, because of the traditional shape in which this smoky, caramelly and earthy sugar is produced. It has far more flavor than brown sugar, which is generally just white sugar with a small amount of molasses added back to it.
