Created from a single sheet of silver, this ewer by Adam van Vianen recounts the Roman myth of Marcus Curtius – a tale of sacrifice, duty and honour.

Van Vianen is recognised as the greatest silversmith of the Dutch Golden Age, with Rembrandt among his admirers. But he thought of himself as ‘a sculptor in precious metal,’ explains Harry Williams-Bulkeley, our International Head of Silver in London. ‘He was seen as a great artist.’

This ewer is the last known example in Van Vianen’s signature style to remain in private hands.
