#LiveLikeARockefeller: Peggy and David Rockefeller had a deep-rooted love of France and French art. A highlight of their collection is ‘Tiger with Tortoise’ by Eugène Delacroix, which they acquired in 1966.

‘We were exceptionally pleased to get it,’ David recalled. ‘It has enormous, lasting qualities and makes one recognise what an outstanding painter Delacroix was.’

Tigers inspired and fascinated Delacroix throughout his career. ‘This is the artist at his boldest,’ remarks François de Ricqlès, our President of Christie’s France, of the painting. ‘Look at how he pushes the tiger right to the front of the picture plane, so it really dominates.’

‘Delacroix was one of the last great Romantics – this painting, essentially, is Beethoven in paint.’
