Bali Ha'i: Walter Spies was enthralled by the natural beauty and culture of Bali and in his Balinese paintings, the artist shows a world brimming with life and enigmatic beauty. The majestic Balinese mountains which dominate ‘Mountains and Pond’ are glorious and iridescent, the peaks radiating with an otherworldly glow. Spies deliberately plays with linear perspective – it remains curiously unclear whether the mountain is a reflection or submerged under water, while the fiery hues suggest the drama of an erupting volcano.
