#LiveLikeARockefeller: Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, David’s mother, was a huge admirer of Diego Rivera’s work. As co-founder of the MoMA, she invited Rivera for a solo exhibition at the institution in 1931 – making him the second artist to receive that honour.

Rivera brought with him this work, ‘The Rivals’, which Abby had commissioned and that he had painted in a makeshift studio aboard the steamship, en route from Mexico.

‘It’s undoubtedly one of Rivera’s masterpieces,’ says Virgilio Garza, our Head of Latin American Paintings in New York, of the work. ‘This easel painting is as monumental as his murals, yet it’s a much more intimate scene focused on regional traditions.’

On arrival in New York, Rivera paid a visit to the Rockefellers’ Manhattan home with his wife, the artist Frida Kahlo. ‘He was a very imposing and charismatic figure: tall and weighing 300lbs,’ David Rockefeller recalled in later life.
