This is the view from high up in the rigging of a schooner ship that I travelled on, we were trying to get from Svalbard to the east coast of Greenland. At the time I made the picture we were stuck in a field of ice floes that refused to let us go. It was the end of the season and there was a possibility that this ice would start to consolidate -to refreeze around us. Eventually we broke free of nature’s grasp, the captain knew what we were up against -he was gentle with the boat and took his time, but we did have to change course drastically. The boat wasn’t really suited to ice like this, but we were alert to the risks and had a backup plan. Sometimes that’s the best thing about trips like this; to feel the strength of the natural world and how small we are within it all and to come home alive.
