Raised with no communication with the wider world, Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri and his family remained in total isolation for two decades, near Lake Mackay on the Northern Territory-Western Australian border. This monumental canvas, which was exhibited in the 2012 dOCUMENTA (13), draws inspiration from the vast salt pans surrounding the lake, drawing the viewer into the ebbing and flowing desert landscape that was his home. Shown here alongside an Indigenous broad shield from the early 19th century, the work will go on view this Saturday as part of our #AboriginalArt exhibition in London.
