Mike Falconeri, an Alaska bush pilot who works in Maine in the winter, took off after transporting a passenger and delivering several packages to Matinicus, a remote island off the coast of Maine. The rocky islands off of Maine reflect the state’s independent character. They’re steeped in rich history and are cherished by the many Down Easterners who visit in the summer. But the band of full-time residents has diminished. Today, 20 people live on Matinicus year-round. Their lives are dictated by the weather and the ferry, which stops there only once a month. A round trip by plane costs $100 (and depends on the weather). Matinicus has no stores, restaurants, or pharmacies. There’s a 1-room school with 2 students, a small post office, a church and a tiny library. There are no gas stations — but then, there aren’t a lot of places to drive. Still, this small band of residents wouldn’t dream of living anywhere else. Among the draws of life on the island: freedom, quiet, beauty, the opportunity to live off the grid, and a frontier sensibility. Swipe left to see @tspinski’s photos of life on an island in Maine.
