20 years after his first visit to Ho Chi Minh City, the writer @worldmatt returned — with his family in tow. “Though I’d been back to visit a dozen times or more since 1997, I’d never brought my wife and kids,” he writes in @nytimestravel. But in the summer of 2016, they finally made the trip together. His worry: “Would the people I love most love the land I love most?” Matt moved to the city as a fresh college grad and fell in love with with “the seething chaos of Saigon’s streets, the head-spinning variety of its flavors, the boundless outgoing enthusiasm of its people.” His family trip became an opportunity to compare the Vietnam he remembered with the new Vietnam. Here, @askmott photographed @padma.de.fleur, a shop and cafe in #HoChiMinhCity that is owned by his friend Quynh Anh Pham. Her shop, hidden down a still-unfinished alley, reminded him of “classic Saigon — an oasis of sophisticated beauty that a casual visitor might never glimpse.” Places like this felt “especially precious” to him when he spotted some of the big changes to the city’s landscape.
