Alina Zagitova of Russia became the 2nd-youngest women’s skater to win Olympic gold today with a program of shrewd design, remarkable stamina, precise jumping and youthful certainty. Technically, Russia didn’t win its first gold medal at these Winter Olympics. The 15-year-old victor competed as a neutral “Olympic Athlete From Russia.” At the medal ceremony, the 5-ringed Olympic flag took the place of the Russian flag and the Olympic hymn played instead of the Russian anthem. The nominal banning of Russia from the @オリンピック for operating a systematic doping scheme at the 2014 Sochi Games was more of a semantic prohibition than a complete ban. 169 athletes from Russia were still permitted to compete in #Pyeongchang. Officially, Russia’s athletes are stateless. But a gold medal is still a gold medal, and there was no question which country Alina represented today as fans chanted her name and waved the Russian tricolor. Our photographer @nytmills photographed #AlinaZagitova on the ice. Swipe left to see her waving to supporters alongside @エフゲニア・メドベージェワ, also from Russia, who won silver, and @ケイトリン・オズモンド of Canada, who took the bronze. #⛸️ #🥇 #NYTXXIII
