It happens every 4 years. @teamusa and @teamcanada play for Olympic gold in women’s #hockey, and the game usually goes down to the wire. This one did that — and more. @jocelyneusa17 scored the game-winning goal in a shootout to give the U.S. a 3-2 victory over Canada, the 4-time defending Olympic champions. Down a goal with 7 minutes to play, the U.S. got an equalizer, and matched Canada through overtime. Then it was on to a shootout, which also went into overtime. Under #Olympic rules for a gold medal game, it came down to sudden death. 4 years ago at the Sochi Games, Canada beat the U.S. in overtime, 3-2, to win gold. The scene at the end of these Olympic tournaments has almost always been the same: the Canadian women throwing sticks and gloves across the ice in celebration, while their American opponents wipe away tears. This time, American sticks and gloves went airborne, giving the American women their first gold medal since 1998, when women’s hockey debuted as an Olympic sport. @nytchangster photographed the game. Here, #TeamUSA forward @hilaryknight celebrated a goal in the first period. Swipe left to see another photo. #???
