Created in 1990, this ‘Abstraktes Bild’ is an early example in Richter’s now-famous series. The painting is a highlight of our upcoming Post-War & Contemporary Art Day Auction in London in March.

‘When I paint an Abstraktes Bild,’ Richter once said. ‘I neither know in advance what it is meant to look like nor, during the painting process, what I am aiming at and what to do about getting there.’

‘Painting is consequently an almost blind, desperate effort, like that of a person abandoned, helpless, in totally incomprehensible surroundings.’
