‘I remember being blown away by this painting when I first saw it almost a decade ago,’ says Francis Outred, our Head of Post-War and Contemporary Art in London, of this triptych by Francis Bacon – offered in our London auction in March. #Christies20thCentury

From the late 1950s onward, the small-scale triptych became Bacon’s signature composition. This particular work is both a depiction of Henrietta Moraes, the artist’s close friend and confidante, and an ode to the renowned 1959 film ‘Hiroshima Mon Amour’.

In the film, lead actress Emmanuelle Riva is captured with a lock of hair hanging across her face. ‘Bacon uses the hair as a compositional device to splice the face and pivot its two sides,’ explains Outred.
