This year marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Chippendale Senior.

‘He is without question Britain’s greatest cabinet-maker,’ says Robert Copley, our International Head of Furniture. ‘Chippendale excelled in every style he worked in, from the whimsical rococo and the fashion for all things Chinese in his early career, to the neoclassical with its straight lines derived from the ancient world.’

Ann Sumner, Historic Collections Adviser at Harewood House Trust in Yorkshire, explains: ‘Chippendale understood the relationship between design and craftsmanship, with many pieces being highly functional and practical, as well as being beautiful.’
.
This year, Harewood House (@harewoodhouse) is highlighting some of Chippendale’s most important and iconic works. Their exhibition ‘Thomas Chippendale – Designer, Maker, Decorator’ is on from 24 March to September 2018.
