Here’s a surprise from the Winter Olympics: It’s cold! But this year, it has been bracingly cold, especially compared with previous #WinterOlympics. Sochi, Russia, was freakishly balmy 4 years ago. So was Vancouver, British Columbia, 4 years before that. Veterans of these events suggested that Pyeongchang in 2018 might be the coldest Olympics since 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway. Athletes and coaches were quick to point out that they frequently deal with cold and difficult weather conditions, but placed #Pyeongchang among the coldest, along with colder-sounding, more northerly places like Siberia, Finland and Canada. For Olympic organizers, though, the most urgent concern is the opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium, an open-air pentagon of massive bleachers. Spectators will receive bags filled with hot packs, seat warmers and windbreakers, meant to limit the chances of hypothermia. @nytmills — who took this photo in Pyeongchang before sunrise after overnight temperatures around 0 degrees Fahrenheit — is one of the photographers who will be on #nytassignment there on Friday. #NYTXXIII
