Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Mexico, are sister cities with shared history. The effect of the wall between them has been profound, but connections endure. When the @nytimestravel writer Cecilia Ballí visited Nogales, Arizona, residents wanted her to see the #Nogales they see: a place steeped in layers of rich history and culture, which maintains a uniquely special relationship with its namesake and sister city across the border, Nogales, Sonora. “I love the concept of twin cities on the border,” writes Cecilia, who grew up in Texas. “Maybe it’s because I grew up in one, or because I’m a twin. I love the idea of 2 worlds that coexist and intermingle, and in fact, depend on each other for survival.” The border between the U.S. and #Mexico is in the news every day, in ongoing debates about immigration and spending on security initiatives. But what is it like to visit destinations along the border? @nytimestravel writers spent time in 5 pairings of places. @burchamphoto took this picture at a pedestrian port of entry between the 2 countries.
