Photo by @johnstanmeyer - After napping, Gaziza Zhubanova’s daughter. Laura, rubs her eyes awake while her mother works in the kitchen at their modest home in Zhynghyldy, Kazakhstan. Gaziza’s husband is employed in Kazakhstan’s oil industry in the Mangystau region, a new economic lifeline in a part of this Central Asian nation that once prospered by trade along the Silk Road. - Personal Notes: Not many people live in the remote region of Mangystau. This part of the country is most often flat, desert, at times dotted with oil pumps. We decided to go visit a village around one hours drive from the hotel, never certain who we may see. Unannounced, we entered the simple calmness of a small village with many Y’s in its name, stopping at a home upon the fringe of Zhynghyldy. Suspicious at first as to why two foreigners would appear, randomly. As life and this wondrous act of photography often does, we were welcomed into the home of Gaziza. Actually, we were requested to enter, a warm smile presented in an equally warm welcoming, so often experienced on this portion of the @outofedenwalk. In kindness, Gaziza made us tea, sipping cross legged on the floor before a table of deliciousness filled with sweets. We chatted with her husband about life today along the ancient trading routes that once moved gold, porcelain, bronze and yes, silk, today dependent on oil. Her still sleepy, shy daughter. Laura, preferred a nearby room, watching cartoons rather than listening to how once this area was the commodity highway of the world. Today, for many, long faded from memory. - @outofwedenwalk @natgeo@natgeocreative #outofedenwalk#kazakhstan #mangystau #zhynghyldy#home #kitchen #child #daughter, #purpledress #silkroad #table #chair
