Guldana Myrzagalieva’s mother prepares her daughter for the betashar ceremony, a ritual of revealing the bride's face, one of the four stages of a traditional Kazakh wedding before marrying Baurzhan Dauletbaev at the families home in Zhanaozen, Kazakhstan.

Personal Notes: Many have been kindly messaging, asking for further details of the photograph I published last Tuesday of the betashar wedding, and of course the Marilyn Monroe pillow. Before the wedding began, 21 year-old Guldana spent time in a bedroom at her families home. Very shy, she ate quietly while female family members would periodically enter to speak with her. Moments before the fourth stage of her beautifully complex wedding began, her mother entered, gently covering her daughters head in a pale pink veil, signaling the start of the betashar or the revealing face ceremony. Shortly after, Guldana was ushered out the bedroom into the main area of the large home where numerous family and friends awaited, including the groom. Walking through the front door, head bowed, still covered, she took the hand of 23 year-old Baurzhan, stepping barefoot into the courtyard where the wedding would take place. After prayers and mystically moving in a circle while others chanted, she lifted the veil and was married. This photograph was never published, falling to the editing floor as so many images do, pleased to share it with you here.
