Yesterday morning's Super Blue Blood Moon Eclipse by @salvarezphoto (Stephen Alvarez)
Eclipses are fascinating. The Moon's orbit around the Earth combined with the Earth's orbit around the Sun means there are -at minimum- two lunar eclipses each year. They are relatively common. But this morning's eclipse was special. A Super Blue Blood Moon Eclipse. Last night was nearly a "Super Moon" meaning that the Moon had swung relatively close to the Earth in its elliptical orbit making it brighter and seem 17% bigger than usual. It was the second full moon in January making it also a "Blue Moon." Lastly the moon entered the Earth's Umbra -its darkest shadow- so it seemed to turn red hence the "Blood" part. We had a thin band of clouds at the horizon where I was that morning so the red glow faded into the dawn. Still it was a beautiful way to start the year.
