Designed to Western taste, the 18th-century basin adopts crenellated rims, which first appeared in English silver around 200 years earlier. They were named ‘monteith’ after an eccentric Scot, Lord Monteith, who wore his cloak hem notched in this fashion.

A large verte-imari monteith, Qianlong period, c. 1740. 20 ¼ in. (51.5 cm.) wide. Estimate: $50,000–80,000.
