‘Aloïse Corbaz was one of the early important artists in the “asylum art” category,’ says Cara Zimmerman, our American Folk Art and Outsider Art specialist, of this fantastical drawing – offered on 19 January in New York.

Born to a middle-class Swiss family, Corbaz became a governess in the entourage of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia, to whom she developed an intense – and entirely imaginary – romantic attachment. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 32 and was institutionalised for the rest of her life.

This work, ‘Aristoloches’, is a double-sided drawing probably created between 1925–33, in which Corbaz takes the Kaiser as her subject.

Two of Corbaz’s greatest admirers were French artists Jean Dubuffet and André Breton. ‘Aristoloches’ remained in Breton’s collection until after his death in 1966.
