10 Old Masters That Changed The Art Market. #10: Our final post in this series explores a Rembrandt painting that needed a little ‘improving’.

In 1795, we offered for auction the belongings of artist Sir Joshua Reynolds. A highlight of the sale was Rembrandt’s ‘Susanna and the Elders’, which sold at auction for 156 guineas.

The work was later sold to a German collector, who donated it to a Berlin museum. In 2015, however, the museum’s scientists discovered that large swaths of the canvas had been repainted since Rembrandt’s time.

Through scientific analysis, it was revealed that Reynolds had thought that Rembrandt’s painting needed ‘improvement’, and had taken it upon himself to make changes! Among the alterations, Susanna’s feet had been repositioned, one of the elders’ faces had been repainted, and the entire background had been reworked.

The revelation has reshaped our understanding of the painting and highlighted the close links between scientific and art historical studies.
