A Fragment of History: This rare surviving piece of union flag flew from HMS Victory during #Nelson’s greatest – and final – victory at the Battle of #Trafalgar in 1805. The flags from HMS Victory came back to the UK with the British hero’s body and were displayed as he lay in state in the Painted Hall at #Greenwich, before being carried in his funeral procession to St Paul’s Cathedral on 9 January 1806, exactly 212 years ago. The “Victory Jack” will be offered in our “Of Royal and Noble descent” sale in London on 17 January and goes on view in our #NewBondStreet galleries this Thursday. #SothebysDecArts #UnionJack
