Preparations for the New Year

At the family home of Okura, the founder of Gekkeikan, visitors can see the preparations for the New Year which is unique to Kyoto.

The Nebikimatsu (see photograph) is a simple decoration made of a pine branch with roots attached, with Japanese paper wrapped around the middle and tied with a decorative paper string. Like Kadomatsu, they decorate the entrance as a pair. They are often seen in Kyoto in the Hanamachi area and on old houses. The attached roots represent, "good fortune taking root" and "continuing to grow."
