From @nytarchives: In December 1949, a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photographer took this picture of a flurry of activity near #OrchardStreet in Manhattan. The culprit all for the congestion: holiday shoppers. Police called it “the heaviest shopping spree on the Lower East Side in 10 years,” and @ニューヨーク・タイムズ painted a vivid portrait of the street scene, including business owners’ attempts to keep the masses fed. “In one instance Italian pizza was sold from a truck at 10 cents a portion or 60 cents a pie,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. Then there was the “dealer in corned beef, pastrami and other similar delicacies,” who “slipped handbills advertising his store under windshield wipers, figuring that when shoppers returned they might want a bite before starting for home.” #tbt #?
