The jobs were the best they would ever have: collecting union wages while working at @Ford, one of America’s most storied companies. But inside 2 Chicago plants, the women found menace. In the 1990s, a string of lawsuits and an EEOC investigation resulted in a $22 million settlement for racial and sexual harassment and a commitment by @Ford to crack down. But another wave of allegations arose in 2010. As women have spoken out about harassment in recent months — in media, technology, entertainment and politics — they have spurred quick action. But much less attention has been focused on the plight of blue-collar workers. “He would come up and smack me on my bottom,” said Tonya Exum, who reported being groped. She recalled a union representative saying: “It’s not sexual harassment. He only did it one time.” Miyoshi Morris had been struggling to find day care centers. By her account, a manager told her she was in trouble because of tardiness. He could help her, she recalled him saying, if she came to his house. “I slept with him because I needed my job,” she said. Another worker, Terri Lewis-Bledsoe, remembers a union rep warning her to stop filing complaints: “You’re going to be called a troublemaker,” she recalled him saying. She shot back, “Then a troublemaker I shall be.” @alyssaschukar took this portrait of Tonya; swipe left to see photos of Miyoshi and Terri.
