After Hurricane Maria, the USNS Comfort, a modern military hospital ship, was sent from its berth in Virginia to help with medical care in Puerto Rico. For an overburdened pediatrician trying to care for a child who needed hip surgery and was displaced from his home in the wake of the storm, the ship seemed like a godsend. But after days spent trying to navigate the admissions process for the 894-foot ship, the doctor finally gave up. The Comfort’s mission has ended, but it leaves behind questions about whether it was adequately used during a time of desperate medical need in #PuertoRico. Over its 53-day deployment, which included travel time, it admitted an average of only 6 patients a day — 290 in total. An additional 1,625 people were treated aboard the ship as outpatients, all at no cost. Following public debate over the Trump administration’s initial reluctance to deploy it, the Comfort arrived 2 weeks into the disaster. A mid-November visit to the ship found dozens of people waiting in tents set up outside. Inside, most of the beds were empty. @dennismanuel took this photo of Olga Quezada receiving a procedure on her knee about the ship. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
