Ash rained down on one of the busiest freeways in Los Angeles today as flames engulfed homes nestled on the cliffs above it, while a much larger wildfire continued to rage out of control in the Ventura area. In Ventura County, more than 1,700 firefighters were working to contain a fire that had burned 65,000 acres by the morning, threatening 12,000 structures. The strong winds that are driving the fires are a normal feature of late fall and winter in Southern California. What’s different this year — and what’s making the fires particularly large and destructive — is the amount of bone-dry vegetation that is ready to burn. The situation is a lot like what occurred in Northern California in October, when high, hot winds fueled fires that killed 40 people and destroyed thousands of homes. But while the north has since had a lot of rain, which has essentially eliminated the fire threat, the south has remained dry. @hlswift took this picture of firefighters moved through a landscape thick with smoke in #Ventura.
