@getoutmovie, the box office smash and awards season honey, almost didn’t get made. Why? Because its writer and director, @jordanpeele, figured it couldn’t happen. “I didn’t have enough role models telling me this movie could be made,” he said. “But to me, it was the missing piece of the conversation. I’d never seen my fears as an African-American man onscreen in this way.” @jordanpeele is the son of a white mother and a black father who, he said, pretty much disappeared from his life when he was about 7. From an early age, he was fixated on race. The broad strokes of his film’s story line — white girl brings black boyfriend home to meet her family — evoked “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” but with a crucial and sinister twist. @jordanpeele, 38, is known for his subversive comedy sketch show with @keeganmic. But he worried that its themes of white villainy and black victimization in #GetOut would keep people away. Instead, @getoutmovie proved to be medicine that audiences didn’t realize they needed. And now, Hollywood prize givers are showering the movie with love. @andrewwhitey took this photo of #JordanPeele.
