The Great Wall of China. The Taj Mahal. The Colosseum. Christ the Redeemer. Chichén Itzá. Machu Picchu. And Petra. These sites and monuments are popularly known as the new 7 Wonders of the World, modern additions to the ancient #7Wonders laid out by Philo of Byzantium in 250 BC. The new wonders, all @Unesco heritage sites, were chosen about 10 years ago. Built on 4 continents, most by ancient and medieval empires, they’re all architectural marvels of enormous scale. They’re also among the most visited tourist attractions in the world. Petra, which was photographed by @tamirhasacellphone, was built by the Nabateans, who lived in the #WadiMusa valley for more than 400 years in a spot strategically located along early silk and spice trade routes. The city — which is in modern-day Jordan — fell to the Roman Empire in AD 106. The Hellenistic facades you see here were carved directly into a canyon, using the natural terrain as guides.
