Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto / Mute swan cygnets bobbing – This image has recently been awarded as a category winner in the Nature Photographer of the Year Awards and it’s an image that my wife, to put it mildly, is really not that keen on! Claire’s banter is always light-hearted and joking but words that she has muttered in relation to this image include ‘embarrassing’ and ‘shameful’ and she was to say the least, perplexed, given how many other images that I have, that I would enter this particular image into a photographic competition. Not only this but this same ‘shameful’ image was also recently awarded in the British Wildlife Photography Awards so I guess that that is why! I must admit that the moment that I first witnessed this behaviour, and subsequently captured this image, I knew that it would be an image that I would enter, if only because it is an unusual and rarely seen perspective that reveals quite a sweet and comical aspect of behaviour. At the time I was standing on a bridge overlooking the feeding swans and so this is a vertical perspective looking straight down towards two cygnet siblings bobbing for food. At the top of the frame you will see the submerged head of the adult swan, doubtless offering guidance, whilst the two cygnets, their backs resting against each other for support, do their best to keep their heads submerged. In doing so both their legs are kicking furiously as they try to maintain their balance and it was this aspect of their behaviour that made me smile the most. Of course competitions are incredibly subjective and I of course understand that some people might look at this image and think that it is crap but with so many people out there taking images I’ll always believe in the importance of trying to capture unique images, as long as of course that it is an image that represents one’s own personal creative vision. And so, and please do be as candid as you like, I’m not remotely precious about such things, what do you all think?
