Photo by @bethjwald // A post from the #archive in honor of the last day of Native American Heritage Month. In this photo, a young woman of the Capefox Dance Group, a traditional #Tlingit dance troupe from Saxman Native Village, wears a traditional #cedar hat and wool robe in the Beaver Clan House, #Saxman Totem Park, #Ketchikan, Southeast Alaska. The Tlingit and the Haida Nations are the ancestral people of southeast #Alaska, a land they call “Aani” or Great Land. The Haida and Tlingit people are born into their identity through their matrilineal clan system and women are important leaders and conduits of knowledge and spirit. The Tlingit and Haida traditional arts – spectacular totem poles, elaborately carved clan houses, ceremonial dance regalia, baskets, as well as dancing, singing and storytelling– continue to be practiced by native artists, elders, youth, families. Saxman village is a small native village with one of the world's largest collection of totem poles, many of which were retrieved from abandoned villages and restored at Saxman by native artists, and others are replicas of older poles. All Americans should acknowledge the incredible cultural diversity of the original nations of this land and support the repatriation of cultural treasures, the honoring the thousands of broken treaties and the sovereignty of the tribes. #southeastalaska #nativeamericanheritage #heritage #nativeamerican #nativeculture #onassignment @ilcp_photographers @natgeo @natgeocreative
