Santa’s workshop is real — and it’s in Brooklyn. When you need an over-the-top, talking, moving, blinking, singing holiday display, Lou Nasti is the man to call. He’s maestro of the holiday lawn ornament. Standing at 5-foot-4, with a big white mustache and glasses on the end of his nose, Lou looks like Papa Geppetto. But when he chuckles or gets excited, he sounds just like Joe Pesci, his voice rising an octave, the words spilling out in rapid-fire Brooklynese. Since he was a teenager growing up in Flatbush, he’s been building robots and other mechanical figures. Now they’re mostly moving Christmas decorations, which he sells and installs all over the world. “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” he said. “You know why? I wasn’t the foreman on the job.” In the showroom of his East Flatbush workshop, you’ll find a swirling, moving collection of elves, bears, reindeer, talking trees and Dickens-era figures dancing in a ballroom. Back in 1980, the company moved to a much larger space in Queens. “ I was very unhappy,” Lou said. “And when you’re in this business and you’re unhappy, the figures all wind up with frowns on their faces.” Visit the link in our profile to see more photos by @grief. #?
