Roya Sadat sold her apartment, car and jewelry to make a movie that deepens the conversation on women’s rights in #Afghanistan. Now, “A Letter to the President” is the country’s selection for the Oscars. A key part of the 85-minute film: a man slaps his wife — and she slaps back. “People love that slap,” said Roya, who was photographed with her son by @jimhuylebroek. “It’s not easy for the people to accept a woman slapping a man. But the film affects them. The slap is a really enjoyable slap — in fact, it’s a slap to the face of all the injustice women face here.” She and her crew say that just the fact of having made the film feels like a victory. But the real payoff is the idea that they are succeeding in getting a male-dominated society to empathize with a working woman. (In the film, the woman who slaps her husband is an accomplished police detective feared by the city’s criminals, and also a wife and mother. Her duties clash with the expectations at home.) From the time she conceived the story in 2010, it took Roya about 7 years to complete the film. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
