Hermes Rosa Jr. dropped out of the 11th grade in 2012. The 4 years that followed were dark; he “tapped out of life,” he said. Hermes rarely left his home in Brooklyn. He spent hours reading Japanese comics and watching anime. He gained almost 100 pounds. And he abandoned his #poetry. He thought he would never write again. “I drowned into a slump,” he said. But his aunt helped nudge him out. She encouraged him to sign up for a high school equivalency preparation program taught at Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow. He did, and just 2 months later, he passed the high school equivalency test. He continued there with educational, occupational and work readiness sessions and went on to get an internship at the hip-hop radio station @hot97. Soon, he found his poetry flowing once again. It was as though he’d never stopped. In September, Hermes, 20, started as a full-time student at @laguardiacc, where he plans to focus on video and media arts. @amr.alfiky took this photo of Hermes holding one of his poems; swipe left to see another photo. | @cssnyorg, one of the 8 organizations supported by the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Neediest Cases Fund, helped Hermes buy a monthly MetroCard.
