“There is so much in mere objects, flowers, leaves, jugs… I can never see mystery coming to an end.” For Scottish Colourist Samuel John Peploe, the execution of the perfect still life was an obsession. ‘Still Life of Roses in a Blue and White Vase’ is one of a series of works in which the contours of blue and white china vases and bowls are contrasted with bright accents of orange fruits and richly coloured roses. Peploe’s fellow Colourist George Leslie Hunter painted still lifes with a similar focus on rich colour and bold composition. Sixty years on, with paintings such as ‘Red Poppies on a Blue Background’, Robin Philipson produced a series of large scale works depicting poppies in which he perfected a technique using a limited, yet extremely vibrant, palette.
