In 1889, 23-year-old Vuillard left his studies at the conservative École des Beaux-Arts and joined forces with a circle of young avant-garde painters calling themselves the Nabis.

The following year, Vuillard abandoned the soft-focus, tonal method of his earliest work and adopted a radically anti-naturalist approach. This painting of lilacs was the artist’s breakthrough statement of his new and provocatively modern style.
