On April 26, 1986 at 1:23 am, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant blew up after operators botched a safety test, triggering an explosion and a fire that burned for 10 days. The radioactive fallout spread over tens of thousands of square kilometers, driving more than a quarter of a million people permanently from their homes. More than 30 years later, the long shadow of Chernobyl continues to darken lives — socially, environmentally, and physically.

In the 1970s, the town of Pripyat was constructed for the plant’s personnel. This amusement park was being readied for the annual May Day celebrations, when the reactor # 4 of the nuclear power plant exploded less than 3 kilometers away. Over the past few years the amusement park has become a major attraction for tourists who are flocking to the zone in droves.
