Portrait of a Sunday towards the end of October. Spicy herbal tea and a homemade cake with olive oil and lemon. A simple recipe from #OstroCookBook, by the truly lovely @juliaostro. The recipes are mostly Italian-ish, approachable, fairly easy to make. But what's important is that for me Ostro falls into the category of what I call "cookbooks with souls". They're not always the prettiest (though @juliaostro's Ostro is way beyond pretty, it's a beauty of a book). But the cookbooks with souls glow with inner warmth, welcoming you to their world, that can be as close or far from your own. You're willing to take that dive, and explore it part by part; you smell the roast and spices when flipping through pages, and hear the sizzling of oil or the bubbling water from cover to cover. Ostro is a cookbook of this sort, with the same comfort and passion that you find on her IG, only more gorgeous, if possible. My lemon and olive oil cake turned out great, although my first time baking with my new oven (hence the dark top). I tweaked it a little, halving the amount of oil, and adding less sugar (ran out of caster sugar and added some cane sugar). There are a couple of more cakes that I'll soon bake, some vegetables that look great, a chicken recipe with grapes that I should make before grapes are gone, and some pasta dishes, including ricotta gnocchi that @emikodavies has convinced us are easy to make. But most importantly, I will keep flipping through Ostro, both for inspiration of cooking for a gathering, or just the mere joy of a pleasant read on an autumn Sunday afternoon. You can order Ostro at @readingsbooks. ?✨?? #LabNoonFood #FlavorsAndEncounters
