Do you know the difference between a screenprint and a woodcut? Here’s our illustrated guide:
.
1. Screenprint: An image is cut into a sheet of paper or plastic film, creating a stencil, in which ink is pushed through with a rubber blade or squeegee. Photographic images can be reproduced on the screen with light-sensitive gelatins. (Andy Warhol, ‘Moonwalk: one plate’, 1987. $100,000–150,000).
.
2. Woodcut: An image is sketched on a block of wood before the surface is carved into with gouging tools. The raised portions are inked and pressed onto paper. Woodcut is the oldest printmaking process in art history. (Blanche Lazzell, ‘Little Church’, 1952. $15,000–25,000).
