On 14 November, the Grand Mazarin diamond – one of France's most storied gems – will be offered at auction in Geneva.

The Grand Mazarin carries over 300 years of royal provenance. Named after its first recorded owner, Cardinal Mazarin, who became France’s Chief Minister in 1642, it was gifted to Louis XIV – The Sun King – in 1661, stolen during the French Revolution, then briefly owned by Napoleon, before being returned to the crown.

In 1887, France's Third Republic offered the Grand Mazarin at auction. The last time this spectacular diamond appeared in public was 1962, over half a century ago. You can see it at our London galleries until 19 October, at Christie's New York on 6 and 7 November, and in Geneva from 9 November.
