I have never opened up about this before, but today is an important day: ⠀ ⠀ #WorldMentalHealthDay ?? ⠀ ⠀ I battle social anxiety disorder. ⠀ ⠀ In honour of this very important day, I am sharing my battles with you, to remind you that you are not alone.? ⠀ Anxiety makes me feel trapped in my body. The subset I battle in particular lurks in even the brightest of days. It can inhibit the simple pleasures in life, such as walking into a coffee shop, or training in a crowded area of the gym. At its worst, I’m locked in my house for days, afraid of anything outside of my bedroom. For the past 3 years it has manifested in physical form, giving rise to panic attacks, and a shortness in breath (where I have to gasp for air in unexpected moments - I have taken a pulmonary function test, and the results show normal lung capacity, so it is anxiety, not asthma) ⠀ While I have battled anxiety for 8 years, just over these past few months have I began to take the first steps in reaching for support and seeking help. I have an incredible support team, and you are all included.? ⠀ I do not say this with self-pity. I do not say this with the intentions of playing victim of my circumstances. I am speaking up and opening conversation in the hopes that others battling mental illness may seek the support and love they deserve.
