Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety There are a great many UK species which I have either never photographed, or that I’ve seriously neglected over recent years. One of those near the top of the neglect list is the otter, an incredible creature with which to work though doubtless one with a great many challenges. This image was probably taken about 7-8 years ago, the last time that I worked with them properly and it’s something that I’m hoping to rectify over the coming months. They are an astonishingly enigmatic species, one that is full of mystery and even now I marvel at their guile and their cunning. On countless occasions I’ve watched them fishing offshore, diving to catch food and then eating it out in the water. Dive, eat dive, eat and then dive. At this point they simply disappear. From a hundred or so metres out in a sea loch they will dive and simply never resurface, which makes photographing them and anticipating their movements extremely challenging. Like all subjects however the more time that I’m able to spend with them the more I can learn about their habits, their patterns of behaviour and their preferred routes in and out of the water. When at close quarters like this one in the image the trail of bubbles is one of the best way to track them underwater though they are the masters of surfacing secretly in the seaweed to keep an eye on who is watching them. Fortunately for me this one was a little more bold and instead of just a nose she poked her whole head out long enough for me to capture a few images of her with her seaweed hat on. Their secretive nature however means that nothing can be guaranteed and they remain one of those species where I can return home with next to bugger all in terms of images. Nevertheless, they remain a joy to spend time with.
