Photo by @bethjwald/@thephotosociety In the first week of October, 2016, a man walks around a row of stupas hung with prayer flags and flanked by a massive pile of prayer stones in Upper Dolpo. On his journey through Dolpo in 1973, author Peter Matthiessen describes the mounds of prayer stones that mark sacred sites across Dolpo in his book “The Snow Leopard”: “… between these stupas and the monastery houses, heaped up into a platform five feet high, is a whole field of carved slabs, thousands upon thousands, by far the greatest assemblage of prayer stones that I have ever seen, before or since. . Om Mani Padme Hum is the commonest inscription, but there are also wheels of life, carved Buddhas, and quotations from liturgical texts.…. the inscriptions are worn to shadow by the elements, and all of these conceal the masses more that lie beneath. The prayer stones at the bottom of these walls must be many centuries old. ….the great accumulation of old stones in the Shey region supports the idea that the Crystal Mountain is a very ancient shrine of Tibetan Buddhism, and perhaps B’on before it.” From “The Snow Leopard” by Peter Matthiessen For many centuries, Dolpo has long been a bastion of traditional #Tibetan Buddhism; remote but important monasteries draw pilgrims from across the Himalayan region and Tibet. But now many of the monasteries are nearly empty, and some of the most important spiritual leaders from Dolpo spend more time in Kathmandu than in the austere and remote world of Dolpo. This is just one of the changes noted by renowned conservation biologist George Schaller during our journey in 2016, following the route Schaller took with Peter Matthiessen in 1973 - a trip that was the basis for Matthiessen’s iconic book, The Snow Leopard. Also along was Matthiessen’s son, Alex, Tshiring Lama, a young biologist from Dolpo. and Peter Werth, of Himalayan Currents. Thanks to National Geographic for a grant that helped support the project.
