The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the Guam Department of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources released 49 Guam rails—their Chamorro name is ko’ko’— to the wild September 18 on Rota. Two of the flightless birds were born at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. The release marks the first time in more than 30 years that there are more Guam rails in the wild than in human care. There are 200 in the wild and 115 in zoos and breeding centers in the United States. In 1984, 21 Guam rails were captured in the wild to start a breeding and recovery program in human care. By 1987 the species was extinct in the wild due to predation by the invasive brown tree snake. Rota is free of brown tree snakes, which is why it was chosen for the release.
SCBI animal keeper Erica Royer traveled to Guam for the release as part of a grant from @fonznationalzoo
